“It was our dream to provide a space for everyone to dance under the stars until dawn after the events at our sister venue, The Garden Resort, close down for the night. And we made it happen,” says Nick Colgan, owner of Croatian institution Barbarella’s, which takes its name from a 1970s venue in Birmingham, UK, and is now in its second Balkan iteration following a stint at Petrcane between 2006 and 2011.

In many ways the antithesis to standard club design — where lighting and layout have to be installed and built to create atmosphere — Barbarella’s is all about the location and natural setting: a cosmic canopy overhead, southern European vegetation providing the serene backdrop. Don’t think for a second that means the former home of the sorely missed Garden Festival and its successor, Love International, can’t hold its own when it comes to production, though.

A well-tuned Funktion-One system ensures exceptional sound for visiting dignitaries, which over the last 12 months have included everyone from Craig Richards to Black Coffee, Kenny Dope to Nina Kraviz.
